DONS GET NEW TRACK PRESS RELEASE ACHIVES

BARRY PICKERING  Friday, May 24, 2002  21:11 GMT

Dons Get New Track

Sean Wilkinson, Events Manager, Wimbledon Speedway

Just to update the news, Tonight the Dons management have agreed a deal with
the landlords, GRA, to uncover the original track from beneath the Stock car
track, and this is another reason why we have made the decision not to run
this Thursday. This gives us enough time to uncover the old track and leave
it prepared for meetings without having to use the "Lay and Lift" system we
have currently in place. The "lay and lift" system basically means we lay
the track on top of the stock car track EVERY Wednesday morning and lift it
all up by 2PM Friday. as you can imagine that is a lot of work, and does not
mean a consistent surface, hence inconsistent racing.
Racing will return, as Barry says, on May 16th with the new permanent track
which will now be the widest in the country (I believe), around 18m from
fence to line! That should ensure excellent racing with plenty of passing!
