BPR clinch titleIan Burman Tuesday, May 08, 2001 18:35 GMT
B.P.R 1 v 1 Percey Mackrill
Deane
A 1-1 score-line was good enough to secure the championship for Broadsands and gain automatic promotion straight back to the Premier League. It was ironic that BPR achieved this with their most inept display of the season but they kept a 12 game unbeaten run alive that effectively won the title for them.
The game was never likely to be a classic as the rivalry between the teams led to a derby atmosphere with an emphasis on a physically natured game. BPR never really established a flow and it was little surprise when the team found themselves one goal down after a mazy dribble by a Percey player found the net. The Perceys looked shocked to have a lead but BPR although not playing well had the heart and commitment to attempt to get back on level terms. This despite the match being affectively a formality, as the Percey’s needed a twelve goal win to gain win the title. The Percey’s only showed with the bare seven men but managed to make themselves difficult to break down with counter attacks breaking from their nifty midfielders. Matt Deane scored his 44th of the season taking his chance well and was met by a feeling of relief by the BPR players. Jon Pressling also did well to clear of the line in what was a fine display for him standing in for the injured Danny Williams.
The draw in my opinion was a fair result. I’m sure both clubs will look forward to future encounters.
