Ellerslie Lose to Takapuna CityJason Trowill Tuesday, June 05, 2001 00:48 GMT
In the 2nd game of the weekends double header Ellerslie AFC 1st team has lost to Premier League leaders Takapuna City 4-1. The 1st half created little opportunity for Ellerslie to score and our visitors took advantage of this and scored at each opportunity they had. It took only 5 minutes for ex-all white and player coach Billy Harris to open Takapuna City's account with a fierce right foot drive into the top left corner of Ellerslie's net. 3 minutes later Stephan Lapwood was unluckly in the way of a partial clearance from Jonathan Chapman and the ball ricochetted into Ellerslie's net. 10 minutes later striker Todd Danks made it 3-0 to Takapuna City after a great cross was drilled home. 10 minutes before half time striker Ian Ferns made it 4-0 to Takapuna City with a well taken shot. Ellerslie Captain Gary Walton received his 1st Yellow card of the season in the 43rd minute for back-chatting the Ref (although he claims he was only talking to fellow fallback Ray Palmer). On the stroke of half time Takapuna City's Chris Braithewaite also went into the book for a challenge that Ellerslie were in the wrong for, I dont even think he understood the ruling on why he was booked. Half time came and Ellerslie found themselves in the sheds 4-0 down, a hard score to come back from. I dont know what Manager Dave Lockton puts in the half time tea (maybe the lads should have a cup before the game) but it sure did work for a depleated Ellerslie outfit who came back firing on all cylinders. In the 55th minute Takapuna's defence finally circumbed to continuous Ellerslie onslaughts when midfielder Peter Downer supplied a magic ball for Robbie Allen to drive home in the bottom left corner of the net. Ellerslie had possesion for about 80% of the 2nd half but could not find the net after some useful shots were turned away by Takapuna's Keeper (who received their Man of the Match). Full time Ellerslie 1 Takapuna City 4. Man of the match for Ellerslie was Ray 'The Butcher' Palmer. Good luck next week to Ellerslie who have drawn National League side University Mount Wellington.
