FIRST TEAM OPEN WITH A DEFEAT

Les Cadbury's Fingres  Friday, August 16, 2002  20:14 GMT

Calverton 1 Newark Town 0

Newark Town's First Team made the trip to Calverton for their first friendly of the season, but wound up the losing side in a hard-fought game.

Unlike their opponents Town didn't have the benefit of a big squad of players to chose from, but manager for the night Nicky Brompton picked the best side available from the eleven who bothered to turn up. Paul Dobb made his debut in the midfield, whilst Matt Evans and James Trentini also made their first starts for the side.

The game was contested strongly in the midfield with Calverton edging the game slightly. Calverton's long ball over the top was well dealt with by a tight Town defence until the home side did manage to hit the net mid-way through the first half. A long ball was misjudged by the Town defence and after keeper Chris Franks could only half clear the ball a long range effort looped over the keeper and the defence and into the goal.

Chances in the game were few and far between but, other than the goal, Town had the best of them. Adam Dobb was twice denied from close range, first by the keeper and then the post whilst Darren Baldwin also had opportunities.

Calverton made use of their numerous subs whereas the Town lads had to stick is out for the full game and were clearly tiring towards the end. So overall, despite the result, it was a good work out for the side.
