Aztec FC v AFC Ferndown (10/2/02)Jez Horgan Monday, February 11, 2002 13:28 GMT
Aztec started off with a revised 3-5-2 formation hoping to take maximum points from fellow struggles Ferndown. After 20 minutes the score was deadlocked but Ferndown were first to make the breakthrough with a mindfielder break from deep and having a free run to notch past Jason. Jason then had to make numerous saves to keep the score at 1-0 before a looping header by Dave levelled the score at 1-1 at halftime. Second hald started dismally for Aztec, conceeding almost immediately. 2-1 became 3-1 and from bad to worse 4-1. However unlike in past weeks heads didn't go down and Aztec fought back through Liam to bring the score to 4-2. All glimers of a win went out the window when Ferndown broke again and scored a fifth. But Aztec's resilliance showed and Liam added to his first goal making the score 5-3. Battling on Dave was brought down in the Ferndown box and a penalty was given. Liam completed his hatrick by slotting away the penalty and then score was 5-4. A fumble by the Ferndown goalkeeper jangled the nerves as the ball ended up in the net, but was disallowed for a foul. A tense finale proved too much for Ferndown and with 3 mintues left on the clock Martin Bungay swung over a free-kick which took a deft headed by Chris to slip it in the corner of the net, for a superb comeback by Aztec. Final Score 5-5.
