Ellerslie Premiers Lose a Nail Biter

Jason Trowill  Sunday, June 10, 2001  22:13 GMT

Ellerslie AFC Mens Premier Team has lost a nail biter 3rd Round Chatham Cup tie to National League side University Mount Wellington, in an extra time Golden Goal Rule by 1-0 at Michaels Ave on Saturday 9th June. In the 10th minute Robbie Allen found the back of the net, was awarded the goal, only to find the linesman flagging prefusely to rule that he was infact offside, even the Uni-Mount Defence said this was not offside and should of been allowed as a goal. Half time came and both teams locked up 0-0 the crowd of around 100 saw end to end action with no joy in the way of goals. In the 51st minute Matthew 'Kippa' Kelly went into the book for a rash challenge. Matthew was substituted in the 66th minute for young Blair Lockton who also found himself in the Referees Book 5 minutes later for another bad challenge. Full Time and both teams locked up at 0-0 still - it was a real nail biter. Nick Mennell, Terry Torrens, Gary Walton and Ray Palmer all had outstanding games but were the old legs up to 30 minutes of extra time and maybe even the hint of Penalties. The crowd's excitment was soon dismissed as it only took 5 minutes of extra time for Uni-Mount Wellington Sub Stu Roberts to find the back of the net after a goal scramble could not be cleared by Ellerslie's tiring defence. I take my hat off to the lads though they provided entertainment and great football to a rather happy crowd who all enjoyed a nice ale back in the clubrooms.
Man of the match for the 2nd week in succession was 'The Butcher' Ray Palmer who had an outstanding game at centre back looks like Mike Horgan is going to be fighting for his position.
Ellerslie are at home again Saturday 16th June to the high flying Mellvile United currently in 5th place but one of their 3 loses in the 1st round was by Ellerslie AFC. Good Luck to the Boys lets get that winning feeling back!!!!!!!!!! University Mount Wellington has drawn Mt Albert Grammer School in the next round this could of been the fate of our lads.
