Effra Academicals Home Page

Effra Academicals (or The Accies, if you prefer) were formed in a pub, then known as The Half and Half, on Streatham High Road, back in September 1999. The Gaffer, Ian Holmes, called upon fellow members of his pub quiz team to gather together anyone interested in forming a 5-a-side squad to play in an Elms League in Crystal Palace on Thursday evenings.

The second part of the team name is in homage to cult Scottish side Hamilton Academical (we added an "s" by mistake). Effra, meanwhile, is an underground river that runs under Brixton, towards Streatham. Most of the squad live in sunny South London. The Accies are followed by a mostly female and entirely godlike band of admirers, collectively known as the Barmy Army.

Possibly the club's proudest moment came when, at the end of the Summer 2000 season, the Elms League awarded us the Fair Play trophy. The plaque is currently on a tour of Effra players' mantelpieces.

For the Summer 2001 season, the Accies took the unprecedented step of taking a season's break from Elms League action - but only in order to help the league to take place. Elms were desperate for teams to make up the numbers, so Effra offered to divide into 2 teams, Dinamo Bar Pitch and Streatham North End. With the pool of players having grown, it was then effectively decided to continue entering two teams, simply to allow each player the opportunity to play as much football as possible. This means that Effra Academicals now plays mainly 11-a-side friendlies, with Dinamo Bar Pitch and Streatham North End taking up the mantle at 5-a-side level. In the Autumn 2001 season, Streatham North End won the first silverware to be achieved by a team under the Effra umbrella, the Elms 5-a-side One Night Cup Competition in the Crystal Palace league.

If you would like to play against Effra Academicals, either in a 5-a-side or 11-a-side game, leave your details in the Guestbook area of this website.

You'll find out more about the players elsewhere on this site, but here's a list of the men who have played in the red'n'blue, orange or yellow...
