 CYCLE SPEEDWAY WHAT IS IT

 Racing bicycles with no brakes around a tight oval track in a scaled down version of motorcycle speedway takes skill and determination. Known as Cycle Speedway, the best that can be accurately recorded is that cycle speedway as we know it evolved on the bomb sites immediately after the end of the war and coincided with the boom in popularity of motorcycle speedway to which it owes much for its early growth. The tight confines of a cycle speedway track and the rule of no bike accessories makes for spectacular action. It is a non-violent contact sport in which competitors race for the chequered flag over 4 laps. The points scoring is like this, 1st 4 points, 2nd 3 points, 3rd 2points, 4th 1 point. The sport does allow some body contact with bumps coming from the upper torso with the lower limbs doing most of the physical work. All competitors must wear a safety helmet and must be covered from the neck down. There are many pile-ups in this aggressive sport but broken bones are very rare. Countries known to be competing in cycle speedway are AUSTRALIA: ENGLAND: HOLLAND: IRELAND: POLAND: SCOTLAND: SWEDEN: WALES.
