06/04/02 - Camden United Res. v Sawston White Lion

Rob Patchett  Sunday, April 07, 2002  20:42 GMT

Our final home game of the season and we’re finally playing on our proper home pitch, Jesus Green. The ground was very hard and there was a strong wind blowing, but it was still nice to be playing football in the sun on Jesus Green again.

Last time we beat White Lion 3-0 but they we’re that bad a side.

Straight from the off we attacked down the left wing and John Murray ran into the penalty area. A Sawston player was tricked by a bit of Murray skill (or did John lose his footing), and tripped John up. Penalty! Tommo stepped up and put it past the keeper’s right hand. 1-0 inside the first minute.

The rest of the half was a catalogue of missed chances by almost every Camden player! Because the game was easy we were too relaxed and wasteful in the final third. Liam had a few long range shots but they didn’t trouble the keeper. Most of our attacking was down the right wing but always ended in either a throw in or a tame cross to the keeper. Quite a few times we had unmarked players in the box but for some reason we didn’t play in any early balls. Trying to walk the ball into the net I think. As for missed open goals, I think Gareth took that award. A complete air shot from five yards out, unmarked and with the goal gaping. Nuff said.

Sawston were restricted to only a few chances and Andy made a few good blocks when needed. Skelly, back at left back after missing last week through injury, was solid as ever. Mark also had a good game alongside me at centre half. I have to say he’s a great player with the ball at his feet but he aint too confident with those headers! J

Just before half time we had a corner on the left side. Liam took it and fired it in. It went straight to the back post, just over Will’s head and straight to Tommo. So I pushed Tommo out of the way and headed it in myself ! 2-0. J Sorry about that Tommo, but you’ve scored enough goals already. That goal made the half time chat a little calmer.

At half time we were pretty confident of a win. As long as they didn’t get an early goal back we were safe. In the second half we also played much better. Again most of our play was down the right. Will was full or running and Tommo had the space to spray the ball about. Speedy got more and more frustrated on the left, as he either didn’t get a pass in the middle or didn’t receive a cross when in the box. Probably due to Gareth constantly trying to score rather than cross the ball!

Our third goal came from a great bit of skill from John Murray. A ball bounced into the box from the left and John controlled it on his right knee and before the ball bounced hit it with his left to lob the oncoming keeper. Great finish.

We nearly got another goal soon after. Speedy hit the bar with a shot from the left and John followed up the rebound but hit the post. At this stage it was 80% Camden attack.

Our fourth goal again came from John Murray. Good work down the right saw Gareth cut inside and cross to John unmarked and ten yards out. He slotted the ball first time past the Sawston keeper. Another good finish from John. 4-0.

The next goal was a nicely placed shot from Tommo. I think it was after Sawston had cleared the ball from a corner. Tommo controlled the ball, did a little Tommo jink and stroked the ball inside the keeper’s left post. 5-0.

Late on Gav came on for Layton, a straight swap at right back.

Finally, with less than five minutes to go to the final whistle, Gareth got on the scoresheet. Judging by the way Gareth wheeled away with both arms in the air you’d think he’d scored from a 30 yard free kick! In reality he leathered the ball in from all of two yards after a cross fell to him at the back post. Apparently there was a suspicion of hand ball too!

A great 6-0 win over a team that would have jumped above us in the league if we’d lost. Same again next week away to Sawston Rovers Res.
