GOOD PERFORMANCE AFTER LONG LAY OFF

Malcolm Spalding  Monday, January 21, 2002  07:04 GMT

Capel Colts 1 Brantham Athletic 3
Colts played their first match since early December against 2nd placed Brantham on Saturday and turned in an excellent display.
With Ashley Knight serving the last weekend of his suspension Colts played with three up front and within a minute of the kick off they went 1-0 in front when Jack Whiley got a shot past the oncoming keeper and Dale Munson followed up to make sure.
Play was fairly even throughout and Brantham equalised midway through the half with a good strike into the corner of the net, it stayed 1-1 until the second half when with 20minutes left Brantham produced the best move of the match getting the ball out wide from which a pin point cross and fine header produced a tremendous save from Ben Ward who got the ball onto the cross bar and it was a Brantham forward who reacted first to steer the ball home. Brantham made the game safe when a long range effort was again pushed onto the crossbar but bounced down over the line.
Colts had a couple of chances late on but Brantham just about deserved their win with Ben Ward marginally the busier of the two goalkeepers.
With Woodbridge going down to a shock 3-1 defeat at Holbrook this win puts Brantham top of the table.
