Midweek-Side Lose to the Reivers

Jim Nicholson  Friday, June 01, 2001  08:09 GMT

Thursday night's game against the Reivers proved
considerably better for EUSCC than the last time
we played them - we still lost but managed to exceed
our previous score of 11!

After winning the toss and fielding, EUSCC's bowlers
were confronted by a batting order that didn't
offer much except an opening batsman with a great
eye and huge swing who was able to hit fours all around
the wicket off any kind of bowling. Nick recieved
the harshest punishment from him and he hit Kevin
around too though Kev had the last laugh as he finally
dismissed him for 71. Dave Brown picked up a couple
of useful wickets in his 5 overs and Ewen came on at
the end to bowl some very tidy inswingers and claim
2 wickets. Reivers posted a formidable total of
140 - but this could have been substantially less
if a couple of their shots in the air had found
a fielder rather than a gap.

Nick and John opened our reply and put on 31 runs from
6 overs before they both got themselves out. It
would be fair to say that they rode their luck
though (how many times were you dropped John?).
Fi and Paul D replaced them at the crease and proceeded
to build an excellent partnership - Paul dominating
the scoring but Fi providing solid support at the other
end. Neither looked like getting themselves out
as their partnership proceeded to 43 - unfortunately
they managed to get each other out as a mix-up led
to Fi being runout. Richard C came in and was unlucky
to be dismissed quickly in the run-chase and then
Russell joined Paul for the last few overs and helped
him to his half-century. In the last over Paul
managed to almost knock himself out with his own
bat - and the effects of this may have been the
reason we just failed to reach 100 - our innings
finishing on 99-4 off 20 overs.

Thanks to everyone who played - and kept their
spirits up on a very cold evening and in the face
of some rather anti-social batting!
