Losing Start for the MidWeek XI

Jim Nicholson  Wednesday, May 02, 2001  10:01 GMT

After last week's abandonment due to the weather,
the EUSCC midweek side played their first game of
the season against Drummond at Peffermill on a
glorious evening.

Drummond won the toss and batted first, making good
progress against good bowling that unfortunately
suffered due to the slow but reliable pitch. Only
two of the Drummond batsmen made decent scores but
they did so quickly and at the end of 18 overs they
had reached 100 for 7. Matt C was the pick of the
bowlers with 3 wickets from his 4 overs, while Chris,
Stewart and Nick L also chipped in with wickets.

The EUSCC reply found the first few overs difficult
in the face of very accurate bowling. However, once
the Drummond wicketkeeper had been taken to hospital
and the change bowlers were called upon, runs became
easier to find and the score picked up. Despite a
frantic last few overs, EUSCC couldn't quite keep
up with the ever-increasing required runrate and in
the end fell 5 runs short of their target. Pick of the
batsmen were Stewart and Paul E who put on 30+ together,
and then later on, Nick L and especially top-scorer
Mark who took us close to Drummond's total.

Hope that everyone enjoyed the game and that there
will be many more close games such as this one, with
everyone getting to take part. Thanks too to Matt
and Douglas for their emergency fielding for the
depleted opposition (great catch Douglas).
