Stumps Fly as Staff Beat Students

Jim Nicholson  Wednesday, May 08, 2002  09:35 GMT

Tuesday night's match for the Staff, aginst the Student's 3rd XI, was played on a cold,
wet and gloomy evening at Peffermill - but that didn't stop a display of excellent
bowling that saw 14 wickets fall in just 27.1 overs, with an astonishing 11 wickets
being clean bowle, that resulted in a comfortable Staff victory.

Chris lost the toss and was invited to field - Jim and Dave F opened the bowling and
while Jim took a while to find his line, Dave was immediately on the button with 4
overs of quick, straight and penertrative bowling that yielded 4 wickets - all bowled.
Jim got a wicket towards the end of his spell, caught by Dave S in the covers, and was
then replaced by Chris at the Pavilion end. Two wickets in 2 balls in Chris's second over
(you guessed it - both bowled) brought the field in for the hat-trick ball but alas it wasn't
to be. Meanwhile, Roger had come on at the railway end and bowled two more of the
Student's batsmen. Despite the insistence of their captain that an eleventh player was
"due shortly", the Staff unsuprisingly refused the offer to hang about until he turned up
and the Student's innings closed on 64-9 from just 13.3 overs.

Martin and Nick M opened the Staff's response and made sensible and steady progress
against tight, but not threatening, bowling. In fact, the weather seemed most threatening
as the grey skies eventually yielded some rain. It wasn't enough to take the players
off though, and despite the bolwers complaining about their grip on the ball that had turned
to soap, the match continued. In the 6th over, after surviving a couple of decent appeals,
Martin was caught on the pads, plumb in front of his wickets and departed for 6. Nick
was joined by Rob N (promoted from his number 11 spot last week!) who hit a great
square cut (later surpassed by Nick's shot of the night) but was bowled by a quick
full toss, again for 6. Dave S joined Nick and a mixture of nice shots, good running
and plenty of extras (36 in a match aggregate of 129) took the Staff to the brink of
victory. Nick was eventually bowled for 19, and Dave departed, somewhat unluckily,
lbw for 11. Donald scored a couple before becoming the 11th batsmen on the night
to have his wicket broken and it was left to Will and Jim to gather the handful of runs
required for a victory by 5 wickets (with 6.2 overs to spare).

An excellent win for the Staff with an good team performance. Man of the Match
however, was once again Dave F for his excellent spell of bowling and his second
4-wicket haul in 10 days.
