Lucky Bruce Scrape Past WhitburnBS Report Sunday, December 02, 2001 22:02 GMT
Whitburn 1 The Bruce 2
The Bruce maintained their one hundred percent league record after surviving a Whitburn onslaught. For long spells the visitors looked distictly second best as Whitburn sought to gain revenge for their 11-3 mauling at the hands of Allan Sampson's side earlier in the season.
Triaist winger Brian Gallagher raised the home support's hopes twelve minutes from the interval when he cut past Garry Cook to fire home a fine opening goal.
Michael Dolan and Scott McNeil were then guilty of squandering great opportunities to build on that lead before the half time whistle came to The Bruce's rescue.
(Alan Stewart: scored crucial equaliser)
Shortly after the restart however, the Hamilton side turned the game on its head. Alan Stewart equalised six minutes after the restart when he poked home a loose ball following good work from Kevin McCaig.
And before too long, prolific scorer Stewart Hunter fired The Bruce into the lead when Whitburn failed to clear a Willie Bell free kick.
Whitburn though regained the upper hand to pile pressure on the Bruce defence for the closing twenty minutes, but failed to find a way through.
