Wakefield LFC Out Of County Cup

Joanna Roberts  Thursday, February 21, 2002  20:18 GMT

Wakefield Ladies FC were beaten 4- by an impressive Morley Spurs side in the Quarter Finals of the County Cup at the weekend.

Wakefield were keen to put on a good performance after losing 10-1 to Morley earlier on in the season.  Wakefield were restricted to 11 players due to new signings not being able to play in the Cup and injuries to regular players, but this didn't put the determined Wakefield side off.

The opening 20 minutes was evenly contested with both sides having chances, however, Morley were the first to break the dead-lock.  After a goal mouth scramble, Morley picked the ball up just outside the box and were able to fire the ball into the back of the Wakefield net.

Wakefield fought on, but with quick passing and two outstanding strikes from 2 Morley players, found themselves 3-0 down at half time.

The second half proved to be a much more even battle, with Wakefield rising to the challenge and putting up a spirited perfomance.

The final score was 4-0 to Morley.

A special mention should go to Jenna Spurr who made 2 spectacular saves in the Wakefield goal.  There were also solid performances by Sarah Knight and Opposition Player of the Match Debbie Wanbon, both players played out of their usual position.

Wakefield's next match is at Home against Beverley Town on Sunday 03rd March, KO at 2pm.
