MEN END SEASON IN STYLE.. GOOD STYLE

Layne Walker  Sunday, April 21, 2002  23:31 GMT

REDBOURNE ROCKETS 0 ABBEY MEN 3 (19-25 08-25 17-25)

TEAM: BINE, BLOBS, GRENV, NEIL, SIMON, STU H

The last match of the indoor season for Abbey saw another 3-0 win for Abbey Men over the Rockets. All credit to the Rockets though who provided a stern test, especially in the first set and are a bunch of youngsters with a future if they stay in the game. Their recycling of the ball was excellent in the face of some fierce attacks from Abbey. At the moment they just have the obvious height disadvantage when spiking/blocking at the net.

In the first set Abbey were missing the odd hit or serve but were always doing enough. Blobs and Bine were unfamiliar pairing for Abbey in the setting positions but they both played brilliantly in linking defence with attack. A nice solid set which allowed the team to loosen up and really start slamming them down in the second set. Simon and myself were now getting some lovely balls to fire into on the wings while Gren and Stu got some good blocks and half ball spikes through the middle. To compound the misery Bine then hit a couple of top spikes on the reverse. 25-8 reflected our superiority. Credit to Redbourne who picked themselves up and kept the scores close for a long way in the last set. But the likes of Neil and Simon were alert to the gaps they were leaving and any lingering hopes well killed by a peach from Blobs.

All in all a great way to finish the season and it’s nice to have a hard time choosing PotM. Think I’ll give it jointly to BINE and BLOBS whose setting was excellent but complimented by good work in other areas too.
