Birmingham still want AthertonAdam Bell Thursday, May 24, 2001 12:47 GMT
Birmingham boss Trevor Francis has confirmed that he plans talks with his board over a deal to take City's Peter Atherton to St Andrews.
The versatile defender has now returned to Yorkshire after a three-month loan spell with the Midlanders, but The Bantams are known to be keen to move him on to ease the wage bill at Valley Parade.
Birmingham had agreed to sign him on a permanent basis this summer if they reached the Premiership, but having slipped up at the semi-final stage of the play-offs for a third successive season, the future of Atherton remained uncertain.
However, Francis has revealed that he would still like to sign him as, he says, he holds the 31-year-old in the highest regard, having also previously worked with him at Sheffield Wednesday.
Atherton joined Bradford on a Bosman-free from Hillsborough at the start of last season and it seems City will not be asking for a fee for the defender.
However, his wages may prove to be a stumbling block to The Blues after their failure to make it to the top flight.
