Locke returns from injury in defeat

Adam Bell  Thursday, April 26, 2001  09:13 GMT

Locke makes scoring return
Gary Locke played for City reserves in a dismal 5-1 defeat to Newcastle last night and should return to the squad against Everton on Saturday.
The former Hearts utility man has been sidelined for a couple of weeks after breaking a bone in his hand, forcing him out of the games against Derby, Charlton and Spurs.
But Locke successfully coming through the 90 minutes and scoring with a 15-yard strike was the only high point of the game as City were emphatically turned over by the visitors.
Ironically, it was against Newcastle in the Premiership clash last month in which Locke picked up the injury, when Gary Speed landed on him as the pair fell.
He looks certain to be back in the squad for the visit to Merseyside but is likely to be on the bench with Gunnar Halle keeping his place in the side that has picked up maximum points from the last two outings.
The reserves latest disappointment was their fifth successive defeat and heaviest at home this season. But they will not finish bottom of the FA Premier Reserve League (North) though, as Sheffield Wednesday are below them, having amassed just two points all season.
Winger Stephen Glass, rumoured to be a City target, starred in the game, but Newcastle’s Stuart Green took the plaudits, bagging a hat-trick.
