Club History

Links Athletic FC was formed in the Spring of 1996 by Simon Ratchford and Jimmy Hutchon two drinking buddies from Fleet.

Originally the club was named Prince of Wales (Fleet) FC as it was based in the Prince of Wales public house in Fleet and played under this name for three seasons. The club colours in those early days were Navy Blue and White.

Jimmy was the clubs first ever manager and he enjoyed some success in those early days with the club going out in the semi finals 4-2 of the John Mayne Invitational Trophy in its first ever season. Jimmy resigned his position midway through the 1997-1998 season and was replaced by Mike Oakley.

The 1997-1998 season remains the darkest period of the clubs short history with results going against the club, players leaving and an all round feeling of despair. The club would have folded at the end of this season if it were not for a meeting between Simon Ratchford and Andy Hoatson it was agreed that Andy would take over as team manager at the start of the 1998-1999 season.

This was the beginning of the clubs 'Golden Era' with the reward for a good solid season a trip to The Recreation Ground, Aldershot for the John Mayne Cup Final. Although this match was lost 5-2 to Division 2 Champions Crooked Billet the players left the ground that afternoon with a great deal of pride at having given superior opposition a good game.

The 1999-2000 season saw the clubs highest ever league position of third and only missing out on promotion by a point and an appearance in the semi final of the Rushmoor 'B' Cup. This season also included another first with JFK Plumbing a local company sponsoring the club and seeing their company name etc on the clubs new kit.
