Laidlaws Laid Low

Brendan Hughes  Wednesday, August 01, 2001  10:37 GMT

A gritty performance by the 7-a-sides team last night led to a surprise one goal win.

Excellent performances by Jeff Howe and Danny Hinde assisted greatly against a team with more individual skill and speed.

The game started off at a fair tempo and almost immediately CC had an opportunity through Jason Turner but his attempt was well saved by Laidlaws ‘keeper. A feat which was to be repeated through the game by, in my opinion, the man of the match.

Laidlaws continued the pressure and it paid off handsomely in the first twenty minutes or so as they took a deserved lead. A few of their challenges left a lot to be desired and CC should be commended for their restraint. That is apart from an outburst by our Republic of Ireland International Serame Broderick.

Hard work kept CC in the game rather than skill as was amply demonstrated by the entire team and they came roaring back towards the end of the game when superior fitness? Started to show. After a shockingly mediocre start to the game Brendan Hughes came up with a handful of well taken goals at the end to secure the victory with the narrowest of margins.
