U10's in 6-3 Cup win over Deepdale Jnrs

Lee Ormson  Sunday, January 27, 2002  16:47 GMT

Deepdale Juniors 'Youth' 3 - 6 Red Rose Juniors

This was the teams 3rd Cup match out of 4 to be played and was played on Astroturf due to both Clubs pitches being unfit for play.

The opening minutes of the half saw Red Rose passing the ball around well and a 1st goal soon arrived when L.Dixon finished well after going on a great run. A 2nd goal arrived shortly after when J.Davies, playing in an unfamiliar role in midfield, finished off another good move to make the score 0-2.

Deepdale then pushed forward as they looked for a quick reply, but 1st half keeper, M.McMahon, was in good form holding onto all that came his way.

Shortly before half-time, Red Rose added a third with J.Davies getting his 2nd of the match (and the season!!) after finding space in front of goal to pick his spot well.

Half-time 0-3

Deepdale started the 2nd half looking much keener and soon pulled a goal back within minutes of the 2nd half starting. This seemed to spur Red Rose back into action as they then began to put real pressure on the Deepdale goal. The pressure finally paid when J.Boland fired home a well struck shot to make the score 1-4.

It was after this goal that some of the Red Rose players then began to lose concentration. With several players waiting up front for their chance to get on the scoresheet, Deepdale made a quick breakaway and were awarded a penalty when a Red Rose defender made a last ditch tackle in an attempt to clear the ball. The penalty was well taken and the score was now 2-4.

Red Rose were still having the better of the play, but were trying to walk the ball into the net rather than using their team-mates who were often in better positions in front of goal.

Deepdale hadn't given up and pulled another goal back after a great run from their player ended with a goal to make the score now 3-4.

Red Rose then woke up again and began to pass the ball as good as they had in the 1st half. It paid off when R.Lawrenson grabbed his teams 5th of the match after a well worked move between several players. Further chances continued to be created, but the ball was going everywere bar the back of the net.

With 10 minutes remaining, Red Rose looked to have put the game out of reach as L.Dixon fired home his 2nd of the game to make the score 3-6. Red Rose then came close to a 7th goal when a great shot from L.Dixon crashed against the crossbar with R.Lawrenson then unable to put the ball over the line.

With the cold weather and the rain now beginning to tell on both teams, the game came to an end with Red Rose running out winners in what had been a fairly good performance from Red Rose.

Full credit to Deepdale who made a game of it, and came close to equalising the scores after coming back from 1-4 down.

All the team played well at times and C.Watson, R.Watterson, L.Dixon & J.Boland did especially well in their positions. Player of the Match though goes to Captain, J.Davies, whose played well in his Midfield role capping it off with his first goals of the season.
