A Tribute to Paul Kirkwood

JASON PIPE  Saturday, April 13, 2002  15:58 GMT

PAUL KIRKWOOD

This week I was deeply saddened to hear that Paul Kirkwood is no longer with us. Paul was a great guy who did so much for Middlesbrough Speedway and for former Bears skipper Paul Bentley. Even though he was a Geordie,it was Middlesbrough Speedway that was closest to his heart. Apart from promoter Malcolm Wright, he was the main person who kept speedway alive on Teesside due to him bringing in lots of sponsors on a Thursday evening.

This was a guy who even though lived in the Newcastle area, would come down to Middlesbrough & Hartlepool and sometimes pick up myself and other Boro fans and take us up to Edinburgh for an away match and then drop us off back here before going back up to Newcastle!! That was the sort of bloke he was.

I enjoyed our many chats together on a Thursday evening on the Centre Green and the away trips I went to with him.He was one of the nicest blokes I'd ever had the pleasure in meeting in the Speedway world. He will be sadly missed.

Thanks Paul on everything you did for Middlesbrough Speedway. You will always be in my thoughts. If speedway was to ever return to Middlesbrough, I will make sure there is a Paul Kirkwood Memorial Trophy raced for each year. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and Paul Bentley.

JASON was the cameraman often seen on the centre green recording the action for Eddivision.
