Lions Climb ladder above Snakes

Alasdair Scott  Sunday, April 22, 2001  02:03 GMT

"Lions climb ladder above Woombye Snakes"

Last night at the Lion's Den, Tewantin, Noosa produced a sound team performance to beat Woombye 3-1. The visitors have certainly added a competitive edge to their game and did their best to contain the more skilful Noosa side, however, for large parts of the game, the Noosa midfield found time and space to stretch the Snakes defence.

The Lion's captain, Michael Williams had another outstanding game, scoring two of the goals and was only denied a hat-trick of headers by a brilliant save from Kevin Milne. Wes Fleiter scored Noosa's second, racing onto Matt Holland's clearance kick he shrugged off the Woombye defence and finished well for his 3rd goal of the season.

In the absence of Neil Kuip, Matt Rocker dropped back to sweeper and had a very solid game alongside Pete Brown and Angel Posadas. The day's games were sponsored by Vybes Leading Edge Music and Noosa were certainly dictating the tune.

Woombye pulled a goal back through Oliver German who caught the Noosa defence napping following a prolonged stoppage. For all their effort, Woombye rarely troubled the Lion's defence and their young side never looked likely to provide an upset.

Match day sponsor, Keith Page, had plenty to smile about following his Under 11 team's first win of the season - 4-0 against Caloundra.

Noosa Lions have been drawn away at Peninsula in the Queensland Cup on Anzac day and are hoping to progress in the new FA Cup style competition to play against some of the bigger clubs. Next Saturday, the Lions travel to Buderim and will be looking for maximum points to retain top spot.
