Ridiculous to the sublime

Alasdair  Friday, July 05, 2002  23:34 GMT

At noon on Friday 5th July, there were 13 available players for the match against Caloundra. From the 19 strong squad, unavailable for selection were Paul Gordon, Alan Dobinson, Ray Stoddart, Darren Bates, Ian Gardner and myself.

However, at 5pm we were down to 12 players, when Steve Luxford called to say he could not make it. Darren Bates apparently had not returned from his overseas trip, so we now expected 11.

So, when we took the field at 8.15pm with 8 players and played the full 90 minutes with the same number, it would be an understatement to say I and the team were not happy with those players who simply decided not to turn up.

Horst Rocker, Dermott Ross and Dave Wilson had neither the courtesy nor seemingly the ability to pick up a telephone and let myself or Wolfgang know that they could not play. All three of these players hold coaching positions at the club, and should know better.

In any event, the team of 8 played better without them and had we had any one else available from the squad, we would certainly have won. In fact, we took the lead through debutant Phil Jackson thanks to some determined play from Rod Heuser and Keith Page.

We held the lead till half-time but after the break Caloundra, woke up to the fact they had 3 extra players (and a couple of linesmen), and their pressure resulted in two quick goals.

The eight men of Noosa, however, kept their heads and their shape and when Dave Williams came out of goal to replace Keith, his pace had an instant effect, he got round the back of the Caloundra defence and put the ball on a platter for Rocket to fire home the equaliser.

The defence, with Steve Dobinson outstanding, held Caloundra at bay and Noosa should have pinched all 3 points but for a deliberate handball which went unpunished.

It was an awesome effort by the team and it may be that we employ the tactic of playing with 8 players, when we next look like losing our shape!

Good on ya guys for a magnificent performance and Horst, Dave and Dermott are going to have to impress at training if they want to make this side.
