HMR MAKE FRONT PAGE HEADLINES!!

Dave  Thursday, February 14, 2002  17:33 GMT

Above: Phil in happier times...scoring vs Parkstone!

COURT CASE DECISION MAKES THE NEWS...LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY!!!

Well, we all remember the incident...Tank was hacked down and, in the resulting melee, Phil was punched in the face by a very friendly Broadstone Con player! The resulting damage to Phils' teeth came to around £1200 and so he decided to prosecute the person involved, a Lee Moorman, to make sure his bill was paid.
This week [ Tuesday ], saw the case come to court at last. The report on the proceedings has now made front page headlines in the Western Gazette! That despite the fact that Phil had asked them to keep it low key, due to the fact he didn't want to rub it in at all.
Reading through the report, I can see a couple of dodgy statements, especially from the defence point of view. Obviously, I am not allowed to copy straight from the paper! But I will tell you some of the stuff anyway! For the full story, please buy a copy of your own!!

SOCCER PLAYER TO PAY £1600
FOOTBALLER PRAISES MAGISTRATES FOR ATTACK SENTENCE
By Shane Dean

'A footballer who had to have four front teeth pulled out after being punched in the mouth during a match has praised magistrates this week.
BLANDFORD HMR striker Phil Watkins...is faced with a dental bill of £1200 after an incident in a game against Broadstone Con club in December at Blandford School.
Lee Moorman admitted ABH and was ordered to do 200 hours of community service and pay £1500 compensation and £118 costs.
Mr Watkins is pleased with the sentence: "The attack was totally unprovoked. All eyes were on a foul which had just taken place when I was hit in the back and then punched. Luckily I had 3 witnesses. I carried on playing as we wanted to win, it was 3-3 and there was only ten minutes to play. The pain was awful, four teeth were wedged down. It is still uncomfortable now. I have been playing for years but that is the first time I have ever been hit.
I am quite surprised at his punishment but it shows how bad the incident was."
It then says that Phil, 'only 5ft 7 and 9 stone, had to miss a month's football'.
"I have played a couple of games since but am always looking over my shoulder. I am quite little and he was stocky"
It says that witnesses described the attack as unprovoked but Moorman claimed he had been goaded during the match.
It describes how Phil was spunged down by 'the team's physiotherapist'!! In other words...Lloyd with his bucket!!! It says he continued the game but because of the pain, had to see a doctor the next day and then the dentist.
The prosecution, Bryan Drew, told the court that the dentist had advised that four teeth had to be removed and he also had an infection.
Keith O'Neill [ defending...although I thought he played for Coventry???!!! ]...said that it was a one off incident and totally out of character: "It was a fairly tight game and there were a lot of niggles throughout" [ I wouldn't know about that!!!!! ]. He claimed that Phil had been constantly goading Moorman and the other Broadstone players. " Something was said by Mr Watkins to my client ,he cannot remember what but something which caused him to react as he did"
Now, we know that Phil is as capable of winding the oppo up as much as any of us can...but he didn't make any bad comments to this player at all. He told me that he would have maybe understood if he had done so.....
Back to the report....O'Neill told the court that Moorman had played for many years [ he is 39 ] and was respected as an excellent player and a role model. [!!]
It finished by saying that Moorman was so ashamed at his reaction that he had given up playing.

From my point of view, it was an unfortunate incident, to say the least. The fact that it went so far though, showed that it was a very serious event. Phil did not take it that far lightly...he did it to try and recoup the money that it will cost him. This has now happened and I hope that nothing else will come of it. It is a shame that the Western Gazette mad it front page news though and also misquoted a couple of the things that Phil told them.
I hope that there will no bad feeling between the two clubs, although we will have some idea next week when Lloyd and I travel to Broadstone to attend a Sunday League meeting!! Let's hope their Rep is nice to us! There will be no excuse if they are not...that type of behaviour doesn't belong anywhere, let alone a football pitch. Let's hope that this will be the end of it all.

STOP PRESS!!! HMR MAKE IT INTO 'THE SUN'!!!
The story has now made it into everyones fave newspaper too.......headline is:
'SOCCER TORY'S £1,500 PUNCH'
A Tory club footballer has been ordered to pay £1500 to an opponent he punched during a match. Lee Moorman hit Philip Watkins, 26, so hard that he had to have four teeth removed - costing £1200 in dental bills.
Moorman, 39, hit out in a niggly [!!!!] game between Broadstone Con and BLANDFORD HMR in Dorset. He was ordered to pay damages after admitting assault. Blandford JP's also gave him 200 hours community service'
Again, I would like to reiterate that I am NOT printing all this to revel in some sort of glory. It was a sad incident all round. But I decided to tell all as it is an important news story and it is kind of nice to see our humble little club mentioned in a national newspaper and the front page of a local one. At least our name will be known now!
STOP, STOP PRESS!!! The story was also in tonight's { Friday ] Evening Echo...basically the same words but they didn't mention the teams. They did though, concentrate on the fact it was a "bad tempered" match....and that Phil was "verbally abusive" to members of Broadstone's team. Which is a load of rubbish. But I suppose he had to defend himself somehow!!!
GOALSCORING CHARTS!!

OK...onto a nicer subject now...after Jamie's great goal on Sunday, I thought I would show you the current goalscorer list. Remember that this is for League and Cup only. Friendlies don't count here, although by clicking on STATS, you can see a full list there. [ I think Jamie has 14 all together, for example ]:
JAMIE......10
PHIL.......8
BANKSIE....6
ANDY LONG..4
GLEN.......3
TANK.......2
NEIL.......1
FUZZ.......1
WEEKESY....1
STUART.....1
Plenty of chances to climb this list...or even get on it! Interesting to see Andy Long in fourth place!!

FIXTURES:
FEB 17TH: HOME TO STUR MARSHALL
FEB 24TH: AWAY TO PARKSTONE
MARCH 3RD: HOME TO HANDLEY SPORTS
MARCH 10TH: AWAY TO DEVOMET
MARCH 17TH: HOME TO HAMWORTHY RBL
It then gives us an away match vs Handley a week later!!! I assume that this is an oversight, although Handley did play an inelligible player against us, so I will check to see if it is actually a re-match.
VOTING SLIPS should be out this week for the Player of the Year award, so please get thinking about who really deserves the first ever trophy!
