Battle in the mud sees IC triumph

Paul Quinn  Monday, November 26, 2001  11:46 GMT

Huddersfield Irish Centre Football Club were celebrating a guttsy victory at Meltham yesterday.  Only Clarke was missing for the encounter as Bell and Quinn recovered in time for the trip to Meltham.  Of all the past encounters this was expected to be the closest of them all as the weather conditions affected play tremendously.

Meltham took control of affairs right from the off, infront of an impressive crowd,  could have scored early through Dean Sykes but for Shanahans outstretched right hand - pictured below.

Play down the hill Meltham bombarded the Irish Centre territory yet failed to find any real penetration to penetrate a resiliant Huddlers back line.

But the Huddlers did mount several attacks of their own forcing corners which produced half chances, and in better conditions could have scored through Bell and Kalinowski.

The first half was not a notch on the second as the game really livened up.  As, it was the conditions dictated a high-octane second period which was packed full of frenetic challenges.  Tattersley and Melthams half time sub Kelly were the first to get involved then Kelly was involved again with Chatten and many felt the Meltham midfielder was walking on thin ice.

The game was too close to call and looked as if the points would be shared, but as the second period progressed the Huddlers, as so often occurs, took command of the game, and when the ball rolled out for Quinn 25 yards out he looked as if he had lobbed the goalie until the cross-bar came to the shaken Meltham teams rescue.

Maybe it wasnt to be the Huddlers day, but just five minutes later in a similar position the ball again fell to Quinn who fired in a shot which deflected off a Meltham defender into the gaping goal.  The away support, burst in to celebration and this enthusiasm was reflected on the field as the Bhoys in green celebrated.  Quinn pictured below clinching the vital goal

Meltham once more were chasing the game and threw everything they had at the back-line of the Huddlers.  Kalinowski could have sealed when he broke through but the slippery surface got the better.   Then a chance for Meltham the ball fell for Islip six yards out and he shot the ball had beaten Shanahan and the home support was already celebrating, but it cruelly crept past the post and the on-looking IC players and supporters faces said it all, relief.

The Huddlers fought like warriors, and the fact the referee played over four minutes stoppage time only heightened the drama.  Shanahan who was superb throughout needed a cool head and on several occasions delt with difficult balls.  But IC came through victorious and remain at the top of the league.  Well done Bhoys!!!!!!
