Unlucky Colts B finish 3rd

Ian Young  Sunday, April 29, 2001  12:35 GMT

Colts B went into their penultimate game of the season against Bourne Vale requiring a win to take the runners up spot from todays opponents. Vale started the stronger and had colts chasing shadows and could have gone a goal down in the first minute when lack of marking allowed Vale a shot inside the six yard box but a poor finish alowed us to clear. Colts midfield was packed and tried to force Vale wide. After the first five minutes we started knew this would be hard and we playing on the counter attack but with poor control we kept letting Vale back in. 10 mins into the game Vale thought they had scored when a shot hit the keeper on the head, deflected off the bar and down on the line but was clearly not in. Soon after Vale went ahead when their midfield pushed up and having beaten two players without a tackle knocked the ball in from just inside the box. Colts needing to win made a double substitution and found that straight away we had more commitment and enthusiasm. We started to get into the game and created a couple of chances which they managed to keep out. Beck's and O'Leary were starting to put the Vale midfield under pressure chasing and harrying. Half time 0-1. The second half saw us push forward and gave their defence no time on the ball with Thomas chasing everything. Vale were now worried and went on the defence, shots rained in from Beck's who on another day would have scored but for their keeper who kept us out also a clear chance came with four colts players in the box no one could get the final touch. Vale had a couple of breakaways and Sam who was excellent along side Paul kept them out despite struggling with a knee injury. The second half we dominated but as time ticked on and requiring two goals it was out of our reach. Colts deserved something out of the game but finally went down 0-1 and with one game to go have finished third. A tremendous acheivement having only lost 3 games all season.
