Baillie's Cream

Ian Young  Sunday, April 22, 2001  08:31 GMT

Colts A having won well the previous week found themselves having to win the last 3 games to ensure promotion. Knodishall were the visitors a team we had scraped a draw with away. Colts had the best of the early exchanges and within a few minutes Mattie Barnes moving forward from midfield fired in a long range shot which the keeper could not hold. Kevin was onto it immediately but fired the rebound straight at the keeper. We were the better side going forward but they were pulling our midfield around when they attacked. Both Stuart and Mattie were doing a lot of chasing after the ball and behind them Daniel and Liam looked solid at the back. A defensive error led to Knodishall taking the lead when from our own thrown in Daniel being last man was put into trouble and as he tried to block a shot the ball took a wicked deflection off him. George had the shot covered but as he was going one way the ball got deflected the other and with little pace on the ball it rolled agonisingly in. The manager called for more commitment and needed to take control in the middle. Mattie and Stuart responed magnificently and started to win the ball and feed the others. It was from a move down the right which saw Stuart take on the defence and from the byline pulled the ball back across the goal where Zach found himself unmarked to register the equaliser. Just before the break Knodishall had a chance to go back into the lead but George was alert and saved at the forwards feet. 1-1 half time and Colts knew the task in hand. From the restart Kevin managed to force a corner and while the away defence were sleeping a quick corner to Stuart saw the latter knock the ball goalwards and in at the far post. Some of the home supporters missed this as it was cakes and coffee time on the touch line and they had not taken their positions for the second half!!! For most of the second half there were few chances although colts could have wrapped it up when first Kevin latched onto a ball and just managed to stop it going out. Dragged it to the foot of the post and somehow their keeper got his hands on the ball before Kevin could roll it in.
Shortly before the end a ball crossed to the right by Stuart found Kevin in space. As the last defender came to close him down Kevin knocked a ball into the box which saw both Mattie and Zach on their own with the keeper to beat. Zach tried to take it first time missing the target. A hard fought 2-1 win having gone a goal down. Next week Bourne. The Baillie's were so thrilled at Stuart's contribution that they decided to go home without him.( Stuart can you keep control of your parents!!)
