Allstars need to up the pace in 2nd leg to winKaren Jones Thursday, March 07, 2002 14:24 GMT
The semi finals of the cup are a two legged affair. With the first leg being at home Allstars were keen to take as large a winning margin as possible into the away match later in the week. The previous matches between the two teams this season had resulted in both team’s winning their home games. Swifts made the early breakthrough but Cathy Livock led the reply and Allstars held a narrow three point lead at the end of the first quarter.
Again Swifts started better and they soon overcame the deficit to open up a four point lead, but again Allstars retaliated and ended the half restoring their three point lead.
Having built a solid platform the portents were good for Allstars and their was hope and expectation that they could increase their lead in the second half. It was not to be, as Allstars missed a succession of free throws, allowing Swifts to gain the initiative. A six point leading margin at the end of the third quarter was added to in the fourth as Swifts seemed to score at will, whilst Allstars struggled. A 15 point deficit left Allstars needing a minor miracle in the second leg.
RSA Allstars 31 – 46 Tanbridge Swifts
The Allstars team was Cathy Livock 20 points, Baerbel Woeltjen 7, Lindsay Russell 2, Donna Moulding 2, Carrie Moulding, Molly Tavolieri, Lindy Duncalf, & Mandy Gould.
