Allstars battle to the end

Karen Jones  Thursday, March 07, 2002  14:17 GMT

A depleted Allstars squad made the short journey to Henfield to play one of the league’s strongest teams. Stand in coach Lindy Duncalf only had 7 players at her disposal, and with two of these only joined the team in recent weeks, a heavy defeat was on the cards.

B&H started, unsurprisingly, the stronger but Allstars amassed a highly creditable 15 points in the first quarter, with Cathy Livock and Molly Tavolieri to the fore.

Again the taller inside players of Allstars caused B&H problems in the second quarter as Allstars reduced B&H’s lead by a point, to close the half 7 points adrift.

Scoring points has been Allstars’ problem this season but with Baerbel Woeltjen adding inside strength, and Donna Moulding finding her shooting touch Allstars scored 15 points in the third quarter and narrowed B&H’s lead to only 3 points.

Miracles rarely happen so the casual observer might have expected B&H to run away with the final quarter, but this was not to be. Leads of 4 and 5 points were attained, but always Allstars fought back. With less than two minutes on the clock B&H scored successive free throws to open up a 5 point lead. Again Allstars retaliated reducing the deficit to 3 points with a minute remaining, but that final score that could have tied the game proved elusive.

Brighton & Hove 55 - 52 RSA Allstars

The Allstars team was Cathy Livock 25 points, Donna Moulding 10, Molly Tavolieri 9, Baerbel Woeltjen 6, Lindy Duncalf 2, Sarah Moloney, Lucy Shazell, & Rachel Dye
