TIGERS PREPARING FOR LOCAL DERBY

Brian White  Thursday, August 15, 2002  07:01 GMT

Mildenhall Superior Exteriors Fen Tigers take on near neighbours Peterborough at West Row on Sunday in what is far more than just a local derby.

The two sides are riding high at the summit of the Conference League table and any points gained, or lost, could have significance in the final reckoning.

"That is certainly quite true, though I cannot over-emphasise that this particular fixture is not the be-all-and-end-all as far as the championship race goes" warned general manager Graham Drury.

"It is going to be one heck of a meeting and one in which I would expect our lads to raise their game for.  Believe me, it is going to take that because Peterborough are doing ever so well and have not got to where they are without turning in some great results.

"What I would hope is that we get a big crowd in to back the riders and that they put on a performance worthy of the billing."

Drury`s caution is understandable as there are still a number of fixtures to come where points will be won and lost.  But there is no denying the Superior Exteriors Fen Tigers are on a roll and very much handily poised in both the league and CL Trophy competitions.  All that despite a team that has been hard hit by injuries.

"We have Malcolm Holloway and Scott James coming back in this week which will strengthen us up and that will give everyone a boost" he explained.  "Paul Smith has just been told that he will have to remain in plaster until the end of this month and, all told, we had half a dozen lads out for last weekend.

"That resulted in one heck of a meeting against Carmarthen last Sunday and whilst we win, lose or draw as a team, I have to take my hat off to James Brundle for the way he rode and won us the match.

"I suppose if we can keep on winning whilst we are down on strength it can only be good for us long term.  Sunday will be a big test for us, though it is one I am confident it is one we can meet.  But whichever way it goes, I really do think it is one in which the supporters are in for something a bit special."
