BEARS BACK ON TRACK

Brian White  Friday, August 09, 2002  08:14 GMT

Middlesborough Bears returned to the track after an absence of six years at Workington’s Derwent Park on Saturday.

The Bears, made homeless after their Cleveland Park track was sold for redevelopment in 1996, lost by eight points in a four-man, six-heat junior challenge.

Carl Shield, who rides in the Conference League with Newcastle, was the star of the show for the Bears as he raced to two superb wins in his seven-point total.

Middlesbrough team manager Steve Harland hailed the comeback a great success and said: “It wasn’t the result that was important, more that we were on track racing with Middlesbrough race-jackets on.

‘Carl was superb for us and to win the first heat with Jitendra Duffill in third place on our return was a fantastic feeling.”

The club are now looking at possible challenge matches with Berwick and Newcastle.
