MEAKINS BREAKS BACKBrian White Thursday, August 01, 2002 11:34 GMT

Carmarthen’s Gordon Meakins has suffered a broken back in what seemed a simple and innocuous fall after laying his bike down to avoid fallen team-mate David Gough during last Sunday’s Conference Trophy match against Wolverhampton.
Thankfully, the early diagnosis is good and he has full movement. He has crushed the lower number three vertebra and is awaiting a move from the West Wales hospital at Carmarthen to a specialised back injuries unit at Heath Hospital, Cardiff, where he will have a special fusion operation to help repair the damage.
With the club holding their first Saturday meeting this week (5.15 pm start) against Peterborough, and with a long list of injuries, they are hoping that skipper Craig Taylor will elect to ride. The Dragons have signed former Somerset rider Matthew Cross, in addition to trying to secure the services of Corey Blackman.
