THE DONS ARE BACK — AND THAT'S FOR GOOD!Brian White Saturday, July 27, 2002 06:57 GMT
Speedway returned to Wimbledon’s Plough Lane Stadium last week with a new track, new
riders and a new Management team and, if the evidence of this, the second comeback for
the Dons, is anything to go by, then speedway is back in London in a big way.
The new circuit, built inside the stock-car track by ace track man Cohn Meredith will be a permanent track, so there will be no need to take it up after every meeting as was necessary with the original temporary circuit.
It was great to see the grandstand packed once again, with the Fulham Brass Band playing before the meeting and radio and TV star David Hamilton, himself a keen speedway fan, introducing the teams and ex-Dons, Trevor Hedge, Olle Nygren and myself.
The new track shape will make for some very spectacular racing and, once the riders get used to the shape, there will be a goad home track advantage for the Dons.
Most of the riders quickly adapted to the new circuit which, although a little narrow on the corners, provided some great racing, especially from Wayne Barratt, Rob Finlow and the leg-trailing Jason Prynne.
The fans went home happy with a first win for the Dons and the new promotion saw all their hard work bear fruit, giving the promise of a bright future for speedway at Plough Lane.
