WOLVERHAMPTON 38 - 51 WIMBLEDON

Brian White  Tuesday, July 23, 2002  21:34 GMT

Wolverhampton's youngsters gave a brave display in going down to defeat at the hands of Wimbledon at Monmore.
On a track made difficult by heavy showers, the visitors packed too much experience against a Cubs side containing five teenagers.
Wolves started well, restricting the Dons to a four-point lead after heat eight, but in the closing stages, Wimbledon's greater all round strength began to show.
In the next six heats they accumulated four maximum heat wins, and a 2-4, while the Cubs could only offer a 5-1 through Rob Finlow and Luke Priest in response.
Wimbledon had the individual stars of the show in Barrett and Elkins, two riders with plenty of higher level experience. Going into the final race, both were unbeaten by an opponent, but on the final lap, with Elkins retiring, Barrett ploughed into the pits turn fence as he chased the Wolves pairing of Priest and Finlow. The race continued, and Wolves collected a 5-0 to reduce the deficit. Thankfully, Barrett was able to walk away.
For Wolves, Priest was impressive, while Finlow battled and Blackwell has steadily improved with each match, but Smith who has been a high scorer for the Cubs in recent weeks, faded as the match progressed.
The Cubs have now concluded their home fixtures, and are left with visits to Camarthen, Mildenhall and Swindon. Promoter Chris van Straaten's bold venture of racing at this level, if judged in terms of the progress of some of his young riders is paying off, as several appear to have the potential to race at a higher level, if they continue to progress.
SCORERS:
WOLVES: Luke Priest 12+3, Rob Finlow 9+1, Scott Blackwell 6, Darren Smith 5, David Speight 4+1, Steven Braidford 2, Lawrence Needs 0.
WIMBLEDON: Justin Elkins 12, Wayne Barrett 11+1, Chris Hunt 8+1, Jeremy Pestell 7, Garry Sweet 5+1, Martin Williams 4+1, Roger Dickenson 4+1.
