Late Goal Denies Mids

Philip Middleton  Sunday, December 16, 2001  14:58 GMT

A contraversial goal five minutes from time denied Mid-Sussex hockey club three points in a closely fought league game away at Gillingham Anchorians.

A close first half saw Mids take the early honours as they produced some good spells of hockey which caused the home defence a number of problems.

Up the other end Brian Leggatt in goal for Mids was called into some early saves.

Mids eventually took the lead after 20 minutes, when Phil Middleton's pass was deflected home by Andy Green from a short corner.

Despite pressing Mids were unable to extend their lead before the break.

The second half took a similar pattern with Mids having the better of the early exchanges.

James Goodwin, Mike Jourdain and Simon Hobden both came close and Mids won some short corners which were defeated by the bobbly Anchorians pitch.

But with Mids not taking advantage of their chances, the Kent side started to come into the game more and more. Only some outstanding defending and wonder saves from man of the match Brian Leggatt prevented an equaliser.

But with only a few minutes to go it was heartbreak for Mids again as a foot in the area went unpunished and the goal stood as the ball found the back of the net.

Despite some nervous last moments Mids held on for a point.

Skipper Andy Green said after the game: "We are obviously disappointed not to have secured the three points, but it was an excellent performance and the players stepping up from the second XI were outstanding and have staked their claim for after Christmas."
