A Surreal Game of Hockey

Philip Middleton  Sunday, December 16, 2001  14:55 GMT

Mid-Sussex 1st XI 1 – 2 Horsham

A convtravertial game saw Mids go down 2-1 at home to local rivals Horsham at home on Saturday.

In a close first half, Mids probably had the better of the game. Phil Middleton and Steve Newton both came close amongst others. Mike Jourdain was also extremely unlucky not to have a penalty flick when from a short corner the Horsham keep made a lot of contact with the stick and little with the ball when clearing his lines.

After the break Horsham went one up after only five minutes with an accurate finish in open play from ex-Mids player Ian Brown.

But when Brown clashed with Paul Harris in the Mids goal following a corner, the Horsham player was shown a yellow card and Paul Harris a straight red card for a waived kick which made no contact.

But despite this, Mids however drew level soon after when Mik Dovey finished from Phil Middleton's short corner strike.

Jason Fitzpatrick, standing-in in goal for the first time ever, soon had to face a penalty flick when he was extremely unlucky to have been adjudged to have commited a foul when clearing the ball. Despite getting close to the flick he was unable to keep the ball out.

Mids, 2-1 down, soon found themselves down to nine when Andy Green was sin-binned a foul tackle.

But down to nine, Mids kept pressing and almost drew level. Phil Middleton finished from close range under the keeper only for a short corner to be awarded for Mids for an earlier infringement.

Skipper Andy Green said after the game:”We had no luck at all today, but having said that we should have won game. Next week is a massive game before the Christmas break.”
