England gain 1 - 1 draw with Sweden

Elliot Hutchinson - Cox  Tuesday, June 04, 2002  15:28 GMT

England grabbed a draw in their first game of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. The Saitama Stadium in Japan was almost full as England fans came all over. From Yeovil Town in England to Sydney in Australia! On to the game. England started well and nearly scored when Darius Vassell`s shot was blocked and cleared. England then went ahead on 24 minutes when David Beckham swung in a normal Beckham corner, and who was there to head it home. No one but Sol Campbell grabbing his first goal in an England shirt. England almost went 2 - 0 up when Michael Owen burst through the defence only for Swedish defender, Olof Mellberg to get a late tackle in. Half-Time Score - England 1 - 0 Sweden - The second half started almost as the first did, the only difference was that Sven Goran Eriksson had told his English boys to settle back a bit, but still try and defend if they needed to! Sven was right. On 59 minutes, Henrik Larsson hit the ball into the English box and English defender Danny Mills stupidly almost passed the ball to the other Swedish striker, Allback. Mills then cleared it only to come out to Niclas Alexandersson. The Everton midfielder then caught English goalkeeper, David Seaman off of his line and found the back of the net with a thumping shot from outside the England box. Michael Owen tested the Swedish defence late on, but only found the side-netting. Full-Time Score - England 1 - 1 Sweden - Our Man of the Match - Ashley Cole ( England ) - Your Man of the Match - Vote on our all new Homepage voting poll!
