Spa squeeze through

SPARTACUS  Monday, April 29, 2002  14:12 GMT

Last minute goal wins tie

Andy Mallet struck a minute from the end of this tense 1/4 final clash against Wyke Regis to secure a league cup semi final slot against Abro Bovington.

In fairness to Wyke they probably deserved to take the game into extra time but when the visiting keeper misjudged Andy Bishop's long ball forward, Mallet could not miss.

Both sides started brightly and it was the Spa who took the lead, Marc Dalley swung over a cross and Kieron Howes headed home from 12 yards.  But, Wyke are a different side these days and struck back ten minutes later, slack defending left Rob Travers on his own at the far post aand his header found the back of the net.  Spa hit back again, this time Mallet provided Howes with an eight yard header that he planted past the keeper.  Dalley had a chance to score himself, but poked his shot wide of the far post when through and Logan headed an Ian Lumsden cross against his own post as Spa probed.

The second half only just started when the ball broke to Dave Knight on the edge of the box, he fired home hard and low to give the visitors an equaliser.  On the hour though Howes struck his third, a curling ball from Lee Miles was met by Howes with a full length diving header before the keeper could collect the ball.

The Spa could have finished it off but BIshop saw his shot go wide and Sean Phelps saw his cleared from the line.  Then in the 84th minute disaster struck the Spartans, Knight saw his shot fall at the feet of Travers after Dave Blackman had saved and he poked home the third equaliser of the day.  But they had not accounted for Mallet and in injury time up he popped with the winner.
