GRENV TURNS THE TABLE ON BIG BIRD

Layne Walker  Monday, June 17, 2002  16:28 GMT

OK, let's get the facts over with. Anne, Bine, Grenv, Janine, Layne, Neil, Stephen and Val played. The opposition were Redborne Rebels and Pharmacia. We beat them both 2-1 but only doing our best at all times to lose by never blocking anything! Anne was made Captain in the 1st game as I sat off and then proceeded to take over proceedings for the whole night ordering people about left, right and centre (oh, how I like to build a false reputation).

The Rebels were in great form and did some excellent spiking, serving and battling defence but shall we say are a little naive. A good example of this was one of the lads blocked someone a foot taller than him but turned away thinking he'd done enough to win the point only to find the opposition had somehow got the ball up and then over. It promptly landed next to him with his team mates all trying to tell him "it ain't over yet"!

The real shock of the night was when Grenv saw red after failing to take a back court scoring opportunity and promptly decided to take all my hits for the rest of the night. It was OK though.. I just poached somebody else's. Later on in the evening Grenv revealed he is to publish a new book.. "Do you want a flake in that".. about the art of scooping. This was in the light of several players claiming to scoop but in fact spadeing and in one case carrying a baby.

My PotM was Stephen, as ever calm and collected spraying the ball around the court, keeping the opposition under pressure although serving series of the night goes to Bine who rattled off 8/9 against Pharmacia and would have done more I'm sure if we hadn't reached 15.
