Alex Rae race on

Adam Bell  Friday, June 01, 2001  09:38 GMT

City are rivalling Wolves for the capture of Sunderland's Alex Rae, but Peter Reid is set to resist all approaches for his combative midfielder.
Wolves are being linked with a £1million move for Rae, who is currently recovering after surgery on his knee.
But there is also understood to be interest from The Bantams, who were linked with the player last week, but yesterday were said to have made a firm enquiry about Rae.
But even though the Scot's operation has gone well and he should be back in action before the start of next season, Reid wants the 31-year-old to stay at the Stadium of Light. A regular first team place for Rae at Sunderland next season is unlikely given the wealth of options Reid now has in central midfield.
But The Black Cats are attempting to build a squad deep enough to challenge for honours in the coming season and see Rae as providing vital competition to the likes of Don Hutchison, Gavin McCann, Stefan Schwarz and new signing Nicolas Medina.
City would be unlikely to match Sunderland's £1million valuation for the player, and Jim Jefferies has also made it clear that he is trying to reduce the average age of his squad.
However, Rae could be an option for The Bantams if Stuart McCall refuses to sign the new deal that has been offered to him and moves on this summer.
