AMMERS LOSE OUT TO DALESIDE YET AGAIN

Stuart White  Sunday, February 17, 2002  17:40 GMT

Pudsey Amateurs, thanks to injuries, work commitments and marital duties (!) travelled to HHC Daleside this morning more in hope than expectation of getting some sort of result in the Challenge Shield 2nd round with at least 6 regulars out.

With the referee not showing up it was left to Daleside's manager to take the whistle and he had us fuming after a only a few minutes play. The ball was played through the right channel to the edge of the box, Richie Walker got to the ball first but was tripped by their striker running across him, who advanced into the box but saw his shot turned away for a corner by my save. Soon after his strike partner weaved his way into the area but I saved his effort low down to my right. It was all Daleside at this point and they were soon to go close again, a curling effort hitting the post and I was able to jump on the rebound. A few minutes later their midfielder's excellent half volley from the edge of the area struck the underside of the bar and rebounded to safety. I also had to make a flying block at their lad's feet when well positioned in the box. Our resistance couldn't last though and our opponents took the lead when the number 11 was played in through the middle, evaded John Hanner's last ditch tackle, and planted the ball past me as I advanced. With relatively tame efforts from Nick and Rob Quinn being our only worthwhile shots on goal, Daleside were in the ascendency at the break. Half time 1-0.

The second half took a very similar pattern to the first with Daleside doing most of the attacking and us looking for that breakaway goal. However, few chances were to come about in a subdued second 45. I had to make a smart block at my near post to prevent their no. 11 getting a brace, and also had to field a long range effort from outside the box. We were not offering much up front at all, and knew a 2nd goal for our opponents would kill us off. It duly arrived with 20 minutes gone, a smart move down the left culminating in a low cross across the 6-yard area for their striker to convert comfortably, despite Jim's challenge. We did nearly pull one back due to a sliced clearance just missing their post for a corner, but it simply wasn't to be, Daleside seeing out the last 15 or so with little problem. Full time 2-0.
