Oviedo Win Play-Offs
Real Oviedo have secured promotion to Southern European Division via the Play-Offs. In week 21 Oviedo made it into the Play-Off zone and finished the season in the last play-off position. In the play-off legs Oviedo were to play Seville. The first leg was played at Seville and the result was a 2-2 draw. At the home leg it ended 1-1 and Oviedo went through to the final on away goals. In the final they were to play Real Sociedad who beat Bari on away goals. The final which was played on neutral turf ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time remained goaless which meant penalties were to be played. Oviedo finally won 4-3 on penalties and won promotion. After the game the supporters, management and players all joined in the celebrations and a lot of the players found it hard to keep their emotions in.
Joint manager Steven Cook said " We are on dreamland. We just can't believe we have won the play-offs after being under-estimated by other managers. The players done theirselves proud with three great performances in three matches. We only just managed to qualify for the play-off's and it just shows how far this team has come since we took over in mid-season."
Club captain Paulo Bento said "This is one of the best moments of my career. I thought I had blown it for everyone when my penalty went over but this win is for the management and all of our supporters. I really believe this squad can be a force next year and push for a second succesive promotion."
The team gave their fans a special treat by going around the town centre in an open top bus.
